How does the
laser remove hair?
The laser emits light, which is absorbed by the pigment
located in the hair follicle. The laser pulses for a fraction of a
second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling numerous
follicles at one time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair’s
regrowth.
Is it safe?
Physicians pioneered laser hair removal after more than 30
years of laser research. The laser parameters were carefully defined by
studying the anatomy of the hair follicle and precisely matching the
laser light and pulse duration to the follicle size, depth, and
location to safely and effectively remove the hair. The LightSheer™
Diode Laser has been cleared by the FDA for permanent hair reduction
for all skin types.
What is the advantage of using a
laser?
Lasers are precise instruments that can be adjusted to the exact
parameters that will specifically disable the hair follicle. Unlike
precision “hair-by-hair” treatments such as electrolysis, the laser
uses a wide beam, which treats many hairs at once. This enables us to
treat large areas such as full legs or arms or a man’s full back,
leaving the area free of hair in just a few hours. You will see
immediate results that will last far longer than shaving, tweezing,
waxing, chemical depilation, or other temporary treatments.
How long will
it take?
Because the laser treats many hairs at one time, facial
areas (chin, lip, cheeks, etc.) can be treated in less than half an
hour. Small body areas (underarms, bikini line, etc.) take less than
one hour. Larger body areas (full back, full legs, both arms, etc.)
usually take about two to three hours, depending on the size of the
area and the density of the hair.
Does it hurt?
Most laser clients describe the treatment as mildly
uncomfortable, but not painful. For sensitive areas, however, some
people do ask for an anesthetic. If you decide that you would prefer an
anesthetic, our Medical Director can prescribe a topical anesthetic for
you.
What happens
to the skin after the treatment?
The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser
treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of
treatment and skin type. Within several minutes of treatment, the
treated area will become slightly red and puffy. This reaction subsides
and within a few hours, the area returns to normal. Most people return
to normal activity right away.
How many
treatments will I need?
The laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active
growth cycle at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter
their growth cycle at different times, additional treatments will be
necessary to disable all the follicles in a given area. Our hair
removal specialists will work with you to develop the treatment program
that best fulfills your hair removal needs. We can also provide
conventional electrolysis on sparse growth or persistent regrowth. The
combination will be quick, permanent hair removal.
What is
Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a method of permanent hair removal, which was first
introduced in 1875. Through advancements and refinements in equipment
and techniques, electrology has become an affordable option for
individuals seeking a practical solution to unwanted hair.
How does
Electrolysis work?
A trained electrologist inserts a small metal probe into the
hair follicle alongside the hair. A small amount of electrical current
is then delivered to the probe by a sensitive electronic device called
an epilator. Depending on the method used, the electric current
destroys the hair root either by heat or chemical action or in some
methods by both at the same time.
What are the different methods of
Electrolysis?
There are three recognized modalities (methods) of Electrolysis.
GALVANIC (direct current) electrolysis – the hair is destroyed by
chemical action. THERMOLYSIS (high frequency) electrolysis – the hair
root is destroyed by heat production. BLEND electrolysis – a
combination of the two modalities where the hair root is destroyed by
both heat and chemical action at the same time. All three modalities
are safe and effective.
Is
Electrolysis permanent?
Electrolysis has been shown to be permanent in over a century of
use. Its permanency has been well recognized by knowledgeable
physicians and is also testified to by hundreds of scientific articles
published in medical literature. In addition to scientific
recognition, there are over one million happy and satisfied persons who
have solved a very personal and embarrassing problem with the help of
electrolysis.
Is
Electrolysis painful?
Whether there is any discomfort during electrolysis varies
depending on a patient’s tolerance, machine settings, modality used, as
well as other factors. During most treatments a definite sensation
should be noticed. It has been described as a “slight heat”,
“tingling”, or “stinging” sensation. We have a very good idea of how to
make your treatments as comfortable as possible. For those finding
treatment too uncomfortable, there is an over the counter topical
anesthetic cream available.
How long does
Electrolysis take to achieve permanency?
Electrolysis takes a series of treatments given over a
period of time. The length of time varies from person to person and is
dependent on many factors. The density and coarseness of the hair, as
well as the total area to be treated, are very important. How well you
tolerate treatments and the consistency of the treatments affect the
overall success. The cause of the unwanted hair and the temporary
methods of dealing with the hair in the past are also involved in the
treatment time. Treatments will be more frequent in the beginning and
less frequent later on.
Is
Electrolysis safe?
Electrolysis has a 120 year history of safety and
effectiveness. We utilize the most up-to-date effective methods of
sterilization, disinfection and antisepsis.
